The ELO/FIBS Rating approach does a good job of
computing relatively stable ratings for players over time. ELO/FIBS is widely used in
chess and backgammon -- and is intuitively nice (uses a player's experience,
relative player strength, etc.). One drawback of ELO/FIBS is that the
computation weighs experience strongly (this is also a strength of the approach,
as players must prove themselves over time). That is, even if you are one
of the strongest players, you will start at 1500 and SLOWLY rise to the
appropriate rating. Here, we adjust the ratings to use
experience "faster." This rating approach gives credit where it is due. For
instance, although some players have very little experience, they HAVE beaten
some of the site's best players.
