| Snowie | 9.5 | 2100 | Generally considered the best backgammon "bot" available. Not cheap at $380 for the full-blown "Professional Edition." However, this IS the best -- and it plays at a world-class level. Some consider Snowie to be better than the best humans. The "Student Edition" is $100 and allows you to see the computer's "equity evaluations." |
| GNU | 9.5 | 2020 | GNU was developed by the "Free Software Foundation." GNU is free -- although it doesn't seem to be as user-friendly as Snowie or Jellyfish. At its highest levels, some believe that GNU's checker play is as good as Snowie's -- but that its use of the cube is not as good. LINK to Windows version. LINK to Users Manual. | Jellyfish | 9.2 | 2050 | Jellyfish (also known as the "fish" or "JF") plays almost as well as Snowie. There is freeware available which allows you to play against JF. However, the versions which tutor and show "equity evaluations" cost money (although they are less expensive than Snowie). $220 for the full version. |
| Slapgammon | 9.0 | 1710 | Backgammon for your Palm Pilot. Has "equity analysis" options and is a relatively inexpensive $30. |
