GNU Tips and Notes
These are notes we have complied from other users and our own use. Please share any tips or notes by sending an e-mail to moorg@zroundtable.com . Thank you!
Plies and Ratings
The default for GNU when you start the program is 0-ply.
0-ply plays at an estimated 1950 level. The 2-ply, reduced setting runs at 2000+. The 0-ply, with a 4% noise setting plays at 1550 (1.5% noise = 1800).
Running GNU at 3-ply and higher may be slow on many but the newest PCs.
Analyzing matches (Match Statistics)
If you want to have GNU analyze or review a DAILYGAMMON.com match, REVIEW the match at DAILYGAMMON.com and then save out the TEXT-LOOKING webpage as a TEXT FILE.
Then, within GNU, click on FILE, IMPORT -- and import (text file from dailygammon.com) as a *.MAT file
The default for the analysis is zero-ply; to change this, go to SETTINGS, ANALYSIS, EVALUATION, CHEQUER PLAY
A good setting seems to be 2-ply -- reduced setting (runs faster).
You can also change the SETTINGS, ANALYSIS, EVALUATION, CUBE DECISIONS.
ANALYZE, ANALYZE MATCH (after you have changed the settings)
ANALYZE, MATCH STATISTICS to see results.
The notation for error rates for GNU and Snowie 3 are different. Snowie computes error as a function of both players' moves (including unforced moves), while GNU uses only THAT player's unforced moves. This seems to be true for both checker error and cube error.
World Class Players may achieve a Snowie "2-4 error rating." This means .0002 - .0004. GNU would rate this player about 0.050%-0.100% or .0005-.0010 -- or a little more than TWICE Snowie's error rating.
WINDOWS, GAME RECORD for a listing of moves with doubtful (?!), bad (?) , or very bad (??) moves highlighted.
WINDOWS, ANNOTATION lists the equity for various move options.
The best way to improve one's game is to look at and analyze individual moves (particularly moves which the BOT highlights).
Error Rating and ELO Rating
GNU gives the Error Rating for your checker play (Total is cumulative for the match) as well as Error ratings for Cube Usage. This information is located in the ANALYSIS, MATCH STATISTICS page.
The sum of these Errors (there are several CUBE categories of errors) is your total error rating.
Snowie computes error as a function of both players' moves (including unforced moves), while GNU uses only one player's unforced moves.
World Class Players may achieve a Snowie "2-4 error rating." This means (or .0002 - .0004). GNU would rate this player about 0.050%-0.100% or .0005-.0010 -- or a little more than TWICE Snowie's error rating.
Solid 1700-2000 players at DG seem to have error ratings of 4-12 on Snowie; 0.100%-0.250% on GNU.
Other Notes
You can even let the computer play itself -- OR you can play GNU at various levels. Go to SETTINGS, PLAYERS.
You can save your SETTINGS in: SETTINGS, SAVE SETTINGS.
