Many people think of the phrase "Spring Forward and Fall Back" when they adjust their clocks for Daylight Saving Time. But how many people know the following tidbits?
1. We "Spring Forward" on the first Sunday in April every year. At 2AM, we move our clocks ahead one hour and begin Daylight Saving Time.
2. We "Fall Back" on the last Sunday in October every year. At 2AM, we move our clocks back one hour and return to Standard Time.
3. It's Daylight Saving Time, NOT Daylight SavingS Time. Singular, not plural because we are saving daylight...
4. Daylight Saving Time was instituted in the US during both World War I and World War II to save energy during the war efforts. Between the wars, and afterwards, local governments decided whether or not to observe Daylight Saving Time. In 1966, the US government standardized the length of Daylight Saving Time.
5. In the US, Daylight Saving Time saves energy to the tune of 1% every day. There is more light in the evenings so we all use less energy!
6. Daylight Saving Time is followed by most of the US and about 70 countries, but is NOT followed in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, the eastern time zone of Indiana and most of Arizona.
