There are a number of sites which offer "free e-mail for life."  These sites offer a variety of services such as forwarding (to your main e-mail address), auto-respond (if you are away on vacation), and the ability to check your e-mail either by phone(!) or anywhere you can log onto the internet.  Some people like to have a short e-mail address (for example, name@mail.com) so that it is easy to remember.  Others may prefer to use the e-mail service provided by their favorite internet portal.

mail.com	9.0	A full-featured free e-mail website, with lots of name extensions (name@dr.com).  Has had some server problems recently (delaying mail-forwarding) -- but still a good site.  Can't beat that name:  "name@mail.com".  Handles e-mail service for email.com (a service of Snap.com).
onebox.com	9.0	Free fax service, voicemail, and e-mail all in one place! Uses a phone number extension for voicemail.  Very useful for voicemail, fax, etc.  However, the extension for the phone is a drag...
hotmail.com	8.5	One of the more established e-mail providers.
usa.net	8.5	Another service -- which is free for American Express cardholders.  (amexmail.com)
eudoramail.com	8.5	Good e-mail provider.
