It's a good idea to "Defragment" your PC's hard-drive from time to time. Due to all of the reading and writing of files to the hard-drive, files sometimes become "fragmented" (broken into smaller pieces) because there isn't enough space for the file to fit in a selected area. These fragmented files slow the computer down because the drive needs to hop around to collect the entire file. Defragmenting your hard-drive will make it more efficient. To do this, LEFT CLICK on START, then go to PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, and DISK DEFRAGMENTER. While you're at it, you might also perform a SCANDISK (also in SYSTEM TOOLS) to check the hard-drive for errors.
UPS -- Using an Un-interruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a good idea to protect your computer from power outages and power surges. UPS's start from about $100 for a small unit (good enough for a home computer); APC is one of the leaders in the industry.
